The end of Carnival, the beginning of Lent

In Poland last day of Carnival is celebrated as "Ostatki" or "Herring day". Herring symbolizes the fact that (especially in the past) people didn't eat meat during Lent. And the beginning of lent is celebrated as Ash wednesday. We go to church and receive ash on our heads. It's a sign of our repentance.
